MANAGER FREIGHT TRADING & LOGISTICS
Introduction: The Energy Management Group (EMG) is a highly profitable and expanding merchant trading business. The group’s growth and progressive plans for the future have created this exciting opportunity for a Senior Freight Trader/Chartering Manager, based in the Netherlands.
EMG utilizes a shipping capacity of over 6 mton per annum. This capacity is split between handymax, panamax, cape size and inland vessels.
The position Reports to Head of Sustainable Trading and operations and will manage a group of experienced freight and logistics professionals.
Job objective: The individual will organize, lead and manage the development and implementation of a worldwide freight trading and logistics business (seagoing and inland) for EMG’s merchant portfolio (financial and physical) and related logistics activities. The portfolio consists of wet and dry bulk for agri-bulk, fossil and sustainable fuels.
The individual will be an experienced, freight and logistics trading professional with extensive chartering, logistics and freight trading (physical and financial) experience.
The candidate will have P&L responsibility and is expected to manage a dynamic trading portfolio, including 2-3 freight traders and 3-4 logistics professionals. The individual will also guide staff with regards to commercial and operational activities, market fundamentals, financial modelling and physical logistics optimizations including risk management. S/he leads and drives market analyses, market evaluations and strategic scenarios for both freight trading and logistics optimisation.
The individual develops and maintains relationships with traditional and non-traditional counterparts/clients/brokers to enable and expand the freight portfolio via multiple commodities (agri, coal, metals); • Originate new marketing, chartering and trading opportunities with counter-parties/clients/brokers • Explore markets and promote new products in collaboration with other desks • Develop new innovative complex structured products with embedded optionality • Identify, create, evaluate, and implement new business origination and development opportunities and strategies including sourcing, sales and exchange/swap.
Result areas: • Leads, manages, develops and drives the development of chartering, freight trading and logistics portfolio and related products. • Responsible for establishing and monitoring exposures, risk limits, identifies price and volume risks in time and uses the analysis results to propose possible hedge scenarios for the freight portfolio. • leads analyses, optimisation, reporting and control of (future) price and volume risks of the portfolio positions. • drives and executes freight trades after performing relevant market analyses, studies and evaluations with respect to the trade in agri bulk, coal and metals and related derivatives. • leads and participates in the development of new client relationships with relevant traditional and non-traditional counterparts/clients/brokers and trading parties; • develops and advises on the development and implementation of methods & techniques for managing the storage, transportation and logistics of current and expected contracts and commitments including buy or sell decisions for the portfolio. • is actively participating in contract negotiations with external international clients with respect to chartering/freight contracts.
Job demands: Knowledge: • Extensive experience in structured physical and financial global freight and logistics transactions. Lead responsibility for commodity freight trading and logistics transactions. P&L responsibility for successful achievement of transaction goals. • Extensive commercial experience in structured and standard chartering contracts and transactions, including extensive involvement in standard and non-standard contract terms, counter-party credit requirements, performance assurances, default provisions, insurance coverage and delivery provisions, etc. • Experience and familiarity with master enabling agreements. Thorough understanding of relationship between master agreements, confirmations, and collateral security agreements. • Extensive analytical and financial experience with financial statements, credit ratings, risk metrics such as VAR and TEVAR, portfolio optimization, and resource management. • Managerial and supervisory experience leading multi-disciplinary project teams and staffs with P&L responsibility. • Extensive experience in agri bulk, coal and or metals market protocols and dynamics, including freight and shipping regimes, logistics management, etc • University degree in business or economics is required • Knowledge of the global freight, chartering and logistics markets and infrastructure.
Skills, experiences: • Over 5-7 years of international experience in physical and financial trading of freight and logistics. • Managing operational and financial risks • Experience with developing new business • Extensive commercial experience • Strategic thinking and doing (‘get things done’). • Excellent management skills. • Knowledge of world of energy. • Good affinity with ICT.
